Chinese cars with "Shanghai origin" have become the new darlings of the global auto market. With the gradual expansion of China's auto exports, Shanghai, the center of China's auto manufacturing, is blowing fresh air into the global auto market.

Busy cars at the port wharf

At the beginning of this year, starting from the Nangang Wharf in the Lingang New Area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, a batch of Tesla electric vehicles slowly left the port and headed for Thailand for the first time. Not long after, within 48 hours after Tesla Thailand’s official website first opened for reservations, these Chinese-made Tesla cars set off a local online and offline sales boom.

The relevant person in charge of the Nangang Wharf said that it provides a new and convenient channel for industrial products such as automobiles manufactured in the Lingang New Area to go to sea. Statistics show that so far this year, the export of new energy vehicles at Nangang Terminal has increased by 38.2% year-on-year.

The hot car export is Shanghai Waigaoqiao Haitong Automobile Terminal. This is one of the largest car export terminals in China. Cars departing from here are sold to more than 100 countries and regions around the world.

Xi Jialin, executive director of the marketing department of Shanghai Haitong International Automobile Terminal Co., Ltd., said that in 2022, the export of automobiles at this terminal will exceed one million, and automobiles are becoming the "new business card" of China's exports.

"In the past two years, the slots of ro-ro ships carrying cars to Europe have often been 'difficult to find'." Xi Jialin said that three or four years ago, only 10% of the cars departing from Haitong Wharf were exported to Europe, but now this figure has increased to more than 30%.

"For the world", made in Shanghai

Consumers in many European countries have now become "fans" of the global pure electric super crossover car MG MULAN.

As a car built for the global market, the MG MULAN of "Shanghai origin" adopted the "China-Europe Synchronization" approach when it debuted last year. In addition to domestic production, it is also available in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Norway, and Sweden. , Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and nearly 20 major European countries were simultaneously listed.

Zhang Liang, deputy general manager of the data business department of SAIC Motor and chief digital officer of SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicles, said that two or three years ago, with the increase in the scale of automobile exports, SAIC took the initiative to deploy a "localization" strategy and decided to target the pain points of consumers in the European market , for the "global car" project, China's auto industry has entered a new stage of "in the world, for the world".

Today, MG MULAN has been launched in nearly 30 European countries, with more than 40,000 orders, of which nearly 5,000 units will be delivered in Europe in the first month of 2023 alone, and it is expected to create a history of "over 10,000 overseas monthly sales of a single model" in the near future record.

Zhao Aimin, Secretary of the Party Committee of SAIC Motor International Trading Co., Ltd., introduced that the global sales target of MG MULAN in 2023 is 150,000 vehicles. needs".

A new stage of "collectivization" going overseas

Statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that in 2022, auto companies will export 3.111 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 54.4%. Among them, new energy vehicles will export 679,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 1.2 times.

"After a long period of 'thick accumulation', China's auto exports have reached a stage of explosion, especially in East China represented by Shanghai, where the new energy auto industry has formed an industrial cluster, which in turn has formed the scale effect of auto exports. "Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, said.

In 2022, SAIC Motor's overseas sales will reach 1.017 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 45.9%, ranking first among domestic automakers for seven consecutive years. From January to February this year, SAIC's overseas sales exceeded 160,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 31.9%, continuing its strong upward momentum.

"From the fact that the export market was dominated by developing countries many years ago, we have entered the European, Australian and New Zealand markets step by step, step by step. The gap between Chinese cars and Japanese and Korean cars in overseas markets is getting smaller and smaller." Zhao said. Aimin said.

According to Zhao Aimin, as China's first systematic, planned, and established auto company "going global", SAIC Motor has built overseas auto companies including innovative R&D centers, production bases, marketing centers, supply chain centers, and financial companies. The entire value chain of the industry, products and services have entered more than 90 countries and regions around the world, forming a "100,000-vehicle level" in Europe, and five "50,000-vehicle level" overseas regional markets in Australia, New Zealand, the Americas, the Middle East, ASEAN, and South Asia.
